The history of Dalegarth is a little hazy but from what we know Dalegarth was built sometime in the Nineteen twenties or thirties on the site of the original Hassness house, Built by George Benson, a 19th-century Manchester mill owner who then owned the Estate. His employees also cut the tunnel which runs through the grounds, so that he could walk around the lake without straying too far from its shore. It is the only one of its kind in the Lake District.
The original Hassness was mysteriously destroyed in a fire around the same time. We think Dalegarth was then built as an annex for workers at the newly built Hassess house, and at some point used as a convalescence home for soldiers recovering from alcoholism in the Second World War. Our Campsite on three level tiers was originally Tennis and croquet pitches and barring a few shrubs and trees its pretty much as it was in its days as a grand country house. Dalegarth was at sometime in the Nineteen fifties or sixties Converted into a guesthouse and has remained so for over fifty years. Acting as a welcome base and shelter for generations of fell walkers exploring the area.
