FELL WALKING >
Buttermere is surrounded by spectacular views of the fells and Dalegarth is situated in one of the finest fell walking areas of the Lake District, If not the world! Many well known walks start from the lakeside path including Haystacks, Red pike, Robinson and Fleetwith pike, and even Great gable and Scarfel pike are within easy reach. Dalegarth is an ideal base for walkers of all ages and abilities. You are truly in the heart of Wainwright country. Without the use of any transport there are dozens of fabulous fell walking options right from our site. Here are a few suggestions!
1) HAYSTACKS AND FLEETWITH PIKE - How about a day on Haystacks. The late Alfred wainwrights favourite Lakeland fell and his final resting place. What a view! A four or five hour round trip taking in Fleetwith Pike too.
2) BUTTERMERE RIDGE - This is the superb ridge of Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag, which makes a wonderful day's walk of about five - six hours right from our front door!
3) PILLAR - For the hardy walker take the track from Gatesgarth over Scarth Gap and drop down westwards to Ennerdale. Head straight up the north face of Pillar via Robinsons Cairn, the Pillar Rake and Pillar Rock to the summit. From the Summit head east to Black Sail pass and back to the headwaters of the river Liza. Pass Black Sail hut, back over Scarth Gap to Buttermere and home to Dalegarth. You will be rewarded in mind and body!
4) GREAT GABLE - Another famous peak is in a good days walk of our site. Take the track from Gatesgarth to the back of Haystacks, up the flank of Brandreth and onto Green Gable. Then, via Windy Gap, up the east flank of Great Gable to the summit.
5) DALEHEAD - The public bus service runs clockwise and anticlockwise from Keswick via Honister Pass and Whinlatter Pass and stops at the gates of dalegarth guesthouse. You can use this bus to get to the top of Honister Pass. Take the track up onto Dalehead for magnificent views of Newlands Valley then drop down the east ridge of Dalehead to Dalehead Tarn then up onto High Spy and Maiden Moor. Follow along the ridge to Catbells dropping down to the Catbells Car Park for the bus back to Dalegarth. All from our front door!
